The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a devastating blow to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign on Tuesday evening, collapsing to a 3-0 defeat against Guinea Bissau at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro.

Coming off a hard fought 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their opening Matchday 1 fixture, a disjointed Nigerian side looked a shadow of themselves. Stripped of the clinical edge of injured star striker Victor Osimhen, Nigeria struggled to find any rhythm, allowing the Djurtus to claim a historic three points on home soil.

How It Unfolded

Guinea Bissau opened the scoring early in the 15th minute when Franculino Djú capitalised on a sharp pass from Renato Nhaga, slotting the ball past Nigeria’s goalkeeper to send the home crowd into raptures. Despite dominating possession for long stretches of the first half, Nigeria’s midfield lacked creativity, failing to provide meaningful service to the frontline.

The second half brought more frustration for the Super Eagles. As Nigeria pushed bodies forward in search of an equaliser, they left themselves exposed on the counter attack. In the 66th minute, Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ advantage, unleashing a clinical strike that clipped the inside of the post before hitting the back of the net.

Any hopes of a late Nigerian comeback were utterly extinguished deep into stoppage time. In the 95th minute, defender Marcelo Djaló rose highest to head home a third goal from a set piece, sealing an emphatic and well deserved victory for Guinea Bissau.

High Stakes in Group L

This heavy defeat leaves Nigeria in a precarious position within Group L. With AFCON 2027 co hosts Tanzania qualifying automatically, Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, and Madagascar are locked in a fierce, three way battle for only one remaining automatic qualification spot.

The 3-0 scoreline not only dents Nigeria’s confidence but severely damages their goal difference, adding immense pressure on the team ahead of the next round of international fixtures
