Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp ahead of the Denmark clash after tensions with Jorge Jesus. The Portugal captain says he will reveal the truth behind his decision.

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team training camp in Copenhagen ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark, following a tense few hours involving head coach Jorge Jesus.

The Portugal captain confirmed his departure on Wednesday after Jesus addressed the situation during a press conference.

Ronaldo said his decision came after the coach’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. He also said he would explain the reasons behind his departure in due course.

The sudden development has raised questions about the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus, who previously worked together at Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.

What happened between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus?

The situation began after Ronaldo was left on the bench for Portugal’s 2–1 Nations League victory over Norway. Despite being available for selection, the 41-year old forward remained an unused substitute throughout the match.

Jesus subsequently confirmed that Ronaldo would not start Portugal’s next match against Denmark, further increasing attention around the captain’s role in the team. (Reuters)

Reports then emerged of tensions between the player and the new Portugal head coach.

Jesus denied that there had been a major incident and rejected suggestions that Ronaldo had refused to train. He said Ronaldo had been doing individual gym work and was expected to return to team training. (Al Jazeera)

However, Ronaldo did not join the squad for Wednesday’s training session. He subsequently left the camp.

Ronaldo promises to explain what happened

Following his departure, Ronaldo took to social media to address the situation.

The Portugal captain said he had decided to leave after the national team manager’s press conference and his conversation with FPF president Pedro Proença.

Most significantly, Ronaldo indicated that he would later explain the reasons behind his decision.

For now, that leaves several questions unanswered about exactly what happened inside the Portugal camp.

Ronaldo’s Portugal future now under the spotlight

Ronaldo’s departure does not amount to an announced international retirement. However, his future with the national team is now attracting renewed attention.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 international goals and 234 appearances.

He had also previously spoken about his international future following the 2026 World Cup, making his latest decision particularly significant.  For now, Portugal must prepare for the Denmark match without their captain.

What happens next?

The immediate focus will be on Portugal’s Nations League campaign and whether Ronaldo provides further clarification about his decision.

Jesus has maintained that there was no major incident between himself and Ronaldo, while Ronaldo has said he will reveal his side of the story later.

Until then, speculation will continue.

One thing is certain, Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s camp, and the football world is waiting to hear his version of events.
