Aston Villa secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Tottenham in a thrilling encounter that produced five goals, several outstanding saves, a VAR controversy and a frantic finish.

Emiliano Buendia and Nicolas Jackson were among Aston Villa’s goalscorers, while Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke found the net for Tottenham.

Tottenham Start Brightly

Tottenham created the first major opportunity of the match when Sávio reacted quickest to a rebound and fired towards the roof of the net. Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced an excellent save to keep the effort out.

Tottenham suffered an early setback when Pedro Porro was forced off with an injury. Archie Gray replaced him and immediately made an impact, latching onto a precise pass inside the box before forcing Suzuki into another fine save with a low drive.

Sávio also tested the Villa goalkeeper again after finding a rebound on the edge of the box, but Suzuki was equal to his effort.

At the other end, Emiliano Buendia came close after controlling a poor pass on the edge of the Tottenham box and shooting towards the left side of the goal. Antonin Kinsky responded with an excellent save.

Nicolas Jackson then sent an effort narrowly wide before Sandro Tonali also came close for Tottenham.

Johan Manzambi Gives Aston Villa the Lead

Aston Villa eventually broke the deadlock when Johan Manzambi produced a superb finish inside the box.

After creating space for himself following a well-taken pass, Manzambi calmly placed his shot into the bottom-left corner to put Villa ahead.

Tottenham’s Jan Paul van Hecke was subsequently booked as Aston Villa went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

VAR Denies Tottenham an Equaliser

Tottenham made a change at the start of the second half, with Mohammed Kudus replacing Mateus Fernandes. Aston Villa also introduced Matty Cash for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Nicolas Jackson was booked for a nasty tackle before forcing another brilliant save from Kinsky with a powerful effort towards the bottom-left corner.

Tottenham thought they had found an equaliser when Mohammed Kudus reacted quickest to a rebound and fired the ball into the net.

However, referee Samuel Barrott was advised to review the goal using VAR, with the officials checking for a possible offside in the build-up.

The decision went against Tottenham, and the goal was ruled out for offside.

Nicolas Jackson Doubles Aston Villa’s Lead

Aston Villa emphatically restored their advantage in the 67th minute.

Nicolas Jackson received a pass and wasted no time, firing an unstoppable shot into the bottom-left corner to make it 2-0.

Tottenham responded by bringing on James Maddison for Dominic Solanke as they searched for a way back into the match.

Buendia Scores a Stunning Goal

Villa extended their lead again in the 79th minute through Emiliano Buendia.

The Argentine produced one of the standout moments of the match, unleashing a spectacular long-range strike that flew straight into the top-left corner.

It was a goal worthy of being replayed for days, leaving Kinsky with no chance.

Tottenham Fight Back Late

Tottenham refused to surrender.

After a series of substitutions, including Lucas Bergvall for Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher for Sandro Tonali, Spurs finally found a way through in the 85th minute.

Mohammed Kudus showed excellent vision to pick out Gallagher inside the box, and the midfielder displayed composure to fire into the bottom-left corner.

Tottenham were suddenly back in the contest at 3-1.

Aston Villa responded by replacing Nicolas Jackson with Tammy Abraham, while Matty Cash was later booked for a bad tackle.

Van Hecke Scores in Added Time

The drama continued deep into stoppage time.

At 90+9 minutes, Tottenham pulled another goal back when Jan Paul van Hecke found a way to squeeze the ball past the goalkeeper.
