Villa had the perfect opportunity to take an early lead when they were awarded a penalty, but captain John McGinn struck the crossbar, wasting a golden chance to put his side ahead.
However, the home supporters did not have to wait much longer for a goal. In the 39th minute, Nicolas Jackson found the back of the net to give Aston Villa a deserved 1–0 lead.
Fulham returned for the second half determined to get back into the contest, and their persistence eventually paid off.
In the 64th minute, a dangerous corner from Alex Iwobi caused chaos in the Villa penalty area. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki failed to deal with the delivery, allowing the ball to cross the line for an own goal and bringing Fulham level.
Both sides pushed for a winner, but neither could find the breakthrough as the points were shared.
