Mikel Arteta’s furious reaction to Max Dowman’s red card has sparked debate after Arsenal’s shocking Carabao Cup exit against Fleetwood Town.

The 16-year-old Arsenal youngster was sent off in the closing stages of Tuesday’s match after appearing to kick out at Fleetwood defender Harrison Neal following a physical challenge. As Dowman walked towards the tunnel, cameras caught Arteta angrily addressing him from the touchline.

After the match, Arteta revealed that his words were linked to a conversation the pair had shared before kick-off.

“Something that we discussed already before the match,” the Arsenal manager told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Arteta also said he wanted to review the footage before making a final judgement on the dismissal, adding that the youngster would learn from the experience.

The incident drew criticism from former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson, who felt the manager could have shown more support to the teenager in that emotional moment. Merson argued that Dowman is still a young player learning to handle the physical and psychological demands of senior football.

However, the red card was only part of a disappointing night for Arsenal. After drawing 1–1 in normal time, the Gunners lost 5–3 on penalties to League Two Fleetwood Town, bringing their Carabao Cup campaign to a painful end.

For Dowman, the incident is a reminder that talent must be matched with discipline. For Arteta, it is another test of how he guides one of Arsenal’s most promising young players through a difficult moment.

What do you think? Was Arteta right to demand accountability from Dowman, or should he have shown the 16 year old more support?
